The Federal Trade Commission FTC is dedicated to protecting consumers by combating deceptive advertising practices, particularly in industries that deal with health and fitness supplements. The FTC's efforts are often carried out in collaboration with other governmental bodies like the Food and Drug Administration FDA, and sometimes involves seeking expertise from authorities such as the National Institutes of Health.
As for the supplement industry, which reported $25 billion in sales in 2009a growth rate of approximately six percent from the previous yearmarket analysts believe that this tr has accelerated due to the economic downturn. People have been sping more on health and fitness products in an attempt to manage their personal healthcare costly doctors visits or prescription drugs, which are often perceived as expensive alternatives.
Throughout the last decade, there has been a noticeable shift toward food advertising clms suggesting that eating specific foods can enhance health and even decrease risks of severe diseases like prostate cancer and heart disease. This highlights the challenge posed by unproven health clms made for various products in these industries.
The FTC has taken decisive action agnst such practices with over one hundred and twenty cases initiated to challenge false or unverified health clms made about supplements alone.
